Mac & Saul isn’t the name of a new pasta dish, it is in fact a glorious combination of melodeon and hammered dulcimer. They met while in the ground breaking Kings of Calicutt with Eliza Carthy who have the dubious honour of being one of the bands responsible for the term Brit-Folk entering the Folk lexicon in the late 90s.

A short lived but intense episode that led on to a duo and eventually their acclaimed first album Sand & Soil released in 2009. The album was nominated for a few minor awards and a track ended up on the 2010 BBC Folk Awards album due to Saul’s nomination for musician of the year.

Saul continues to be a ubiquitous force on the folk scene but both Mac and Saul have been up to all sorts over the years, from Saul’s role of Songman in the West End hit War Horse to Mac’s performances of The Lord of The Rings soundtrack with The London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, both have been pushing into new areas.

10 years on from Sand & Soil and in its anniversary year they’ve got the bug again and are picking up where they left off with a new album planned, all very hush hush. They will be touring again with their amusingly irreverent banter and of course their trade mark immaculate but gutsy playing style.

With a new sense of purpose and lots of new musical directions to explore they can’t wait to get out into the folk clubs and festivals and show you what Mac & Saul 2.0 sounds like.

the Bright Young Folk review

Maclaine Colston and Saul Rose’s début album could be called an odd affair, containing as it does recordings over 10 years apart. The decision to include their earlier recorded material with new tracks is, however, a triumph, and the album feels both coherent and accomplished.

The hammered dulcimer is not an instrument I have ever paid much attention to, or that has been at the fore of the music I listen to, so I was intrigued to hear how it would sound in prominence with the melodeon of Saul Rose. As I discovered, it is an enchanting instrument that, to me, sits somewhere between a harp, a piano and a guitar. The instruments, and Mac and Saul’s voices, compliment each other as they travel over a wide range of topics and influences.

My stand out tracks from the album are, perhaps predictably from someone who enjoys the humorous stories in folk, ’The Lazy Farmer’ and ’The Devil and the Feathery Wife’. Both are performed with gusto from two gents who are obviously relishing the stories and vocabularies involved!

I was also taken aback by two tracks that feature guest vocalists. ’British Man O’War’ is sung by Mark Colgan (Mac’s father), and is a gorgeous sea shanty of love and the sea. The other track is ’Don’t You Go’ which I must confess I disliked when I first heard it. But, it seems context is everything, as the information in the sleeve notes completely transformed how I approached the song, and now I find it both beautiful and haunting, with Teph Kay’s vocal imploringly delivered. A poignant pause in an album which drives forward with passion.

Mac was a wannabe rock drummer age 13 when Jim Couza the American hammered dulcimer player rocked up and changed all that. Within months Mac was on stage with Jim at Greenwich Folk Festival. Mac is still undergoing therapy.

Saul focused his attention on melodeon at a similar age after breaking a leg, his parents Kate and Pete founded the local Morris side so Saul never really stood a chance. ... more
